The first stop on my holiday was Ljubljana, which is the capital city of Slovenia. I had seen this in various TV programs (likely The Amazing Race and in some cycling race) and it appealed to me as a cool place to visit. I spent more time there than in other cities. I had planned 2 day trips from Ljubljana (which I will write about in separate blog posts). In total I had 4.5 days in Ljubljana, the 0.5 being the balance of the day when I got there and then 4 full days. And as I said, of the 4 full days, 2 were day trips out of town. I had been keeping a close eye on the weather and the 1st day there looked to be the only really nice and best day of the lot so that was the one I allocated to Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bled, the other trip to Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave could be done even if the weather was so-so, which proved to be the case. I did an "activity day" at a Slovenia Olympic Festival in the town as well, which wasn't planned or something I knew would be happening. All in all I had the perfect amount of time there to get in everything I wanted to do. My stay there/schedule ended up looking like this:
I'll cover the Ljubljana sightseeing here and add the day trips and "My Olympics" in new posts.
Everything in Ljubljana is centered around the Ljubljanica River which makes it quite a compact city to see everything that it has to offer. You can quite easily walk end to end, say lengthwise, obviously not something you'd do really without sightseeing, in about 10-15min.

I had a fantastic time staying in Ljubljana, I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 day trips I did from there. A great start to my holiday.
